        At approximately 10:47 a.m., Lord Nicolas received a parcel of correspondence via the east postern, consisting of seven sealed envelopes and one wax-stamped missive from an unidentified sender bearing the crest of a lesser viscounty. His Lordship, in a state of evident ennui following the previous evening's exertions, elected to peruse these documents al fresco upon the south terrace, where the apiary hives had recently been repositioned at his own prior insistence, citing "aesthetic harmony with the roses."

        Initial inspection proceeded without anomaly. Lord Nicolas extracted the first letter, a perfunctory invitation to a hunt, and discarded it unread into the gravel. The second, concerning estate tithes, met a similar fate, torn asunder and cast towards the goldfish pond. It was upon opening the third envelope, a billet-doux from a correspondent of dubious repute, that the disturbance commenced.

        A nest of wasps, disturbed either by the proximity of the hives or by the sharp report of ripping vellum, issued forth in force. His Lordship, mistaking the initial vanguard for "flying confetti" as per his colourful utterance, swatted at them with the very letter in question. This provoked a full sally. Within seconds, the swarm engulfed him, targeting eyes, nostrils, and the tender juncture of his throat, where prior scarifications from unrelated incidents had left the flesh sensitised.

        Lord Nicolas responded with characteristic vigour. He inhaled sharply, drawing three specimens into his lungs, expelled them in a coughing gale that scattered the missives across the lawn, then seized a nearby croquet mallet to prosecute a counter-offensive. Four wasps met pulverisation upon the stone balustrade. Two more perished beneath his boot. The remainder, numbering approximately nineteen, persisted, burrowing into his cuffs and collar. His Lordship thereupon divested himself of his shirt, employing it as a flail, which action exposed his torso to further stings, particularly across the pectorals and abdomen, where welts rose in symmetrical clusters resembling a grotesque heraldry.

        In the escalation, Lord Nicolas upended the nearest hive, liberating several thousand additional insects. The terrace devolved into pandemonium. Maids scattered from the laundry lines, the under-gardener sustained multiple stings to the calves whilst effecting retreat, and the postman's nag bolted, scattering the remaining letters into the rosebeds. His Lordship, now divested to the waist and capering like a dervish, pursued the swarm into the apiary proper, where he overturned two further hives before regeneration subdued the inflammation.

        By 11:22 a.m., the incident concluded. Casualties: approximately 147 wasps, one croquet mallet, three hives, sundry correspondence rendered illegible. Lord Nicolas sustained eighty-three stings, all healed within the hour, save for residual itching which prompted him to immerse himself in the fountain, thereby drenching the surviving letters recovered by myself. No fatalities among staff, though Cook reports a mild anaphylactic episode in the scullery boy, treated with nettle tea.

        Recommendations: Relocate apiary to north woods. Institute a policy against al fresco correspondence. Suggest His Lordship wear gloves for future post.
