Aileen Wuornos murdered seven men along Florida highways in a killing spree that lasted from late 1989 into 1990.

Her case drew intense attention because the victims were motorists she encountered while hitchhiking and working as a sex worker. Each man was shot with a .22 calibre pistol, and their bodies or vehicles were left in remote areas.

Wuornos maintained that every killing occurred during an attempted rape, yet investigators found patterns that contradicted consistent self-defence claims. The following sections examine the victims, the sequence of events, the police work that led to her arrest, and the legal outcome.

Background

Aileen Carol Pittman was born in Rochester, Michigan, in 1956. She endured severe childhood abuse and entered a pattern of petty crime and sex work by her early teens. By 1986 she had settled in Florida, where she lived transiently between Daytona Beach and the central part of the state.

In late 1989 she began a relationship with Tyria Moore. The pair relied on income from sex work and occasional theft. Wuornos carried a small-calibre revolver for protection during encounters with clients. That weapon later became central evidence in the murder investigations.

The Victims

Richard Mallory, aged 51, disappeared on 30 November 1989 after leaving his electronics repair shop in Clearwater. His body was found in December in a wooded area of Pasco County. He had been shot three times.

David Spears, 43, vanished on 19 May 1990 while driving from Tampa to work in Sarasota. His naked body turned up two weeks later in a swamp near Wildwood. He had been shot six times.

Charles Carskaddon, 40, was last seen on 31 May 1990 heading to Hardee County. His body surfaced in early June near Interstate 75. He suffered nine gunshot wounds.

Peter Siems, 65, left Florida on 22 June 1990 to visit relatives in Arkansas. His body was never recovered, but his car was identified after Wuornos and Moore abandoned it following a crash in Alabama.

Troy Burress, 50, disappeared on 4 July 1990 while making deliveries in Marion County. His body was located in August near a forest road. He had been shot twice.

Charles Humphreys, 56, a retired police chief, went missing on 11 September 1990. His body appeared in Marion County later that month. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the torso and head.

Walter Gino Antonio, 62, vanished on 19 November 1990 after a trip to Daytona Beach. His body was found in a remote area of Dixie County. He had been shot four times.

The Crimes

Each victim was picked up while driving alone. Wuornos later told police she offered sexual services and then shot the men when they became violent. Crime scenes showed the bodies were usually stripped of clothing and valuables. Personal items and vehicles were often sold or abandoned far from the discovery sites.

Ballistic analysis linked the same .22 pistol to five of the six recovered bodies. The absence of defensive wounds on several victims and the number of shots fired raised questions about the self-defence narrative during later trials.

Investigation and Arrest

Marion County detectives noticed similarities among the Burress and Humphreys cases in autumn 1990. Pawn shop records led them to Wuornos, who had sold items belonging to several victims. Tyria Moore became a cooperating witness after police located her in Pennsylvania.

Wuornos was arrested on 9 January 1991 in a bar in Port Orange. She gave a detailed confession on videotape, describing each encounter. Moore provided corroborating testimony about the disposal of evidence and the couple’s movements.

Trial and Conviction

The first trial, for the murder of Richard Mallory, opened in January 1992 in Volusia County. The jury rejected the self-defence argument after hearing forensic evidence and Wuornos’s own statements. She received a death sentence.

She was later convicted of five additional murders and received five more death sentences. Appeals focused on her mental health history and claims of ineffective counsel, but all were denied. Wuornos waived further appeals and was executed by lethal injection on 9 October 2002.

Psychological Profile

Psychiatric evaluations conducted before trial diagnosed borderline personality disorder and antisocial traits. Experts noted a history of childhood trauma, substance misuse, and unstable relationships. These factors were presented during sentencing but did not alter the jury’s findings on premeditation.

Legacy

The case prompted renewed discussion about the vulnerability of sex workers and the difficulties they face reporting violence. Several books and documentaries examined the investigation and the media coverage that followed Wuornos’s arrest. Florida authorities closed the Siems case as a homicide based on the confession and circumstantial evidence, even though the body remains missing.

Conclusion

The murders committed by Aileen Wuornos left seven families without fathers, brothers and husbands. The investigation relied on careful linking of physical evidence, pawn records and witness cooperation. The convictions stood after full judicial review, and the case remains a documented example of serial homicide along American highways in the late twentieth century.
