Hayden Panettiere left an indelible mark on popular culture, becoming a defining face of a generation through roles that blended vulnerability, strength and sharp wit.

As the indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes, she embodied the show’s iconic rallying cry, “Save the cheerleader, save the world,” transforming a teenage character into a lasting symbol of resilience. She later brought complexity and star power to the country music world as Juliette Barnes in Nashville, while her performance as the quick-thinking Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise cemented her status as a beloved final girl in modern horror.

From child stardom to adult breakthroughs, Panettiere’s performances captured the spirit of early 2000s television and film, leaving behind characters that continue to resonate with audiences long after the credits rolled.

Hayden Panettiere, the American actress and singer best known for her roles as Claire Bennet in Heroes and Juliette Barnes in Nashville, died on August 16, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina. She was 36.

Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her death in a statement describing his daughter as “an incredible light and a force of nature” who brought immense love and joy to those who knew and watched her. The family asked for privacy as they processed their loss.

Police and emergency medical personnel responded at approximately 1:51 p.m. local time to a report of an unresponsive woman at an apartment complex in Greenville. Medical assistance was administered, but Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said an acquaintance had placed the 911 call.

According to the Greenville Police Department, the preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The cause and manner of death remained under investigation by police and the Greenville County Coroner’s Office at the time of initial reporting. Although dispatch audio and subsequent media reports prompted speculation about the circumstances of her death, no official cause had been released.

Panettiere died five days before what would have been her 37th birthday.

Early Life and Childhood Career

Hayden Lesley Panettiere was born on August 21, 1989, in Palisades, New York, to Lesley Vogel, a former soap opera actress, and Alan Lee “Skip” Panettiere, a New York City Fire Department captain. She had one younger sibling, actor Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023 at the age of 28 from complications related to an enlarged heart and aortic valve problems.

Panettiere entered modelling and advertising almost before she could walk, appearing in her first commercial at around 11 months old. By the age of five, she had already appeared in dozens of advertisements. She attended South Orangetown Middle School before being homeschooled to accommodate her increasingly demanding acting schedule.

At around four years old, she joined the soap opera One Life to Live as Sarah Roberts. She later played Lizzie Spaulding in Guiding Light. Voice acting followed, including Princess Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life in 1998. Her work connected with the film’s read-along recording also earned her a Grammy nomination while she was still a child.

Her early film career included a memorable performance as Sheryl Yoast, the outspoken daughter of football coach Bill Yoast, in Remember the Titans opposite Denzel Washington. Further roles followed in Raising Helen, Ice Princess, Racing Stripes and the cheerleading comedy Bring It On: All or Nothing.

As an adult, Panettiere spoke openly about the price of beginning her career so young. She described missing much of an ordinary childhood, struggling to maintain friendships and privacy, and navigating a complicated relationship with a family structure built around her career. In her 2026 memoir, she reflected on childhood pressure, stage fright and the difficulties that emerged when she later attempted to redefine those relationships on her own terms.

Rise to Stardom: Heroes and Beyond

In 2006, Panettiere landed the role that would make her internationally famous: Claire Bennet, a teenage cheerleader with regenerative healing abilities, in NBC’s Heroes.

The phenomenal success of the show’s first season and the phrase “Save the cheerleader, save the world” transformed Panettiere into a household name. Claire became one of the most recognisable characters on television, but the sudden fame also brought intense paparazzi attention, scrutiny of Panettiere’s appearance and the pressures associated with becoming an international celebrity while still a teenager.

She found another defining role in the musical drama Nashville, which ran from 2012 to 2018. As ambitious and volatile country singer Juliette Barnes, Panettiere demonstrated both her dramatic and musical abilities. The performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress, while songs performed for the series appeared on the Billboard country charts.

Panettiere later discussed the unsettling parallels between Juliette’s fictional struggles and events in her own life, particularly storylines involving motherhood, postpartum difficulties and addiction.

For horror audiences, however, Panettiere will remain inseparable from Kirby Reed.

She first played Kirby in Scream 4 in 2011. Intelligent, sarcastic and armed with an encyclopaedic knowledge of horror films, Kirby quickly became a fan favourite. Her apparent fate remained a subject of discussion among Scream fans for years before the character’s survival was finally confirmed.

Panettiere returned to the franchise more than a decade later in Scream VI in 2023. The older Kirby was no longer simply the quick-witted teenager audiences remembered, but a survivor carrying the consequences of what had happened to her. Panettiere retained the character’s humour and energy while bringing greater maturity and vulnerability to the performance.

Other credits included I Love You, Beth Cooper, the television film Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy and the 2026 psychological thriller Sleepwalker. She also pursued music alongside acting throughout different periods of her career.

Personal Life, Motherhood and Struggles

Panettiere dated her Heroes co-star Milo Ventimiglia before beginning a relationship with Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2009. The couple became engaged and welcomed their daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, on December 9, 2014.

Panettiere subsequently spoke with unusual candour about experiencing severe postpartum depression following Kaya’s birth. She later described turning to alcohol and other substances as her life became increasingly difficult.

Panettiere and Klitschko separated around 2018. During her struggles, Kaya went to live primarily with her father. Panettiere later described the separation from her daughter as one of the most painful experiences of her life. She maintained contact with Kaya and repeatedly spoke about the importance of their relationship while challenging public assumptions about the circumstances surrounding the custody arrangement.

Her later relationship with Brian Hickerson became the subject of considerable public attention following incidents of domestic violence. Hickerson ultimately pleaded no contest to felony domestic violence charges and served jail time in 2021. Panettiere later wrote and spoke about processing the experience, recovery and forgiveness without diminishing what had happened to her.

She was also candid about addiction and repeated attempts at treatment and recovery.

In May 2026, Panettiere published her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. The book examined child stardom, complicated family relationships, mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, motherhood, the death of her brother and her sexuality. It also chronicled her efforts to understand the experiences that had shaped her and to reach a place of greater acceptance.

The memoir and the interviews surrounding its publication represented one of the most personally revealing periods of Panettiere’s public life.

Activism

Panettiere’s work extended well beyond acting.

In 2007, she travelled to Taiji, Japan, where she joined activists protesting a dolphin drive hunt. Panettiere and other campaigners paddled into the water in an attempt to interfere with the hunt, an incident that attracted international attention. She subsequently became a prominent supporter of whale and dolphin conservation.

She also advocated for voting rights and statehood for Washington, D.C. In 2011, the city recognised her advocacy with a “Hayden Panettiere Day”.

Her relationship with Wladimir Klitschko also connected her closely with Ukraine. During the Euromaidan protests, she appeared publicly in Kyiv alongside Klitschko. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, she established Hoplon International, an organisation intended to support relief efforts including medical supplies and protective equipment.

Legacy

Hayden Panettiere’s career spanned more than three decades, beginning with infant commercials and progressing through soap operas, major films, international television hits and one of modern horror’s most popular franchises.

She was a two-time Golden Globe nominee and a Grammy nominee before adulthood, but awards tell only part of the story. Panettiere possessed the unusual ability to remain recognisable to several generations for entirely different reasons.

For some, she will always be the precocious Sheryl Yoast in Remember the Titans. For another generation, she is Claire Bennet, the indestructible cheerleader at the centre of Heroes. For Nashville viewers, she is the fiercely ambitious and deeply troubled Juliette Barnes. For horror fans, she is Kirby Reed, the sarcastic teenager who refused to disappear quietly and eventually returned as a survivor.

Her willingness later in life to speak publicly about postpartum depression, addiction, childhood fame, domestic violence, motherhood and the death of her brother added another dimension to a public life that had begun before she was old enough to understand fame.

Panettiere is survived by her daughter Kaya, her parents and extended family. Her younger brother, Jansen, predeceased her in 2023.

As the investigation into the circumstances of her death continues, no official cause of death has yet been released.

What remains certain is the scale of the career she compressed into just 36 years. Hayden Panettiere spent virtually her entire life in front of an audience, growing from a child performer into one of the most recognisable television actors of her generation. Her life contained extraordinary achievement alongside profound personal difficulty, but her characters endured.

Claire Bennet could heal from anything. Kirby Reed survived Ghostface. Juliette Barnes repeatedly fought her way back from disaster.

Hayden Panettiere made audiences believe in all three.
