The Move Toward Longer Narratives
Exhibition venues expanded from fairground booths to dedicated nickelodeon theatres after 1905. Longer running times became necessary to fill programmes. Producers responded by increasing shot counts and extending running times from one or two minutes to ten or fifteen minutes by 1908.
D. W. Griffith joined the Biograph Company in 1908 and directed more than four hundred short films in the following five years. He systematised match cuts, close-ups, and varied camera distances within a single scene. The techniques appear fully developed in The Lonely Villa (1909) and The Lonedale Operator (1911).
European producers also lengthened their output. Italian historical epics such as Cabiria (1914) reached nine reels and required orchestral accompaniment. These films demonstrated that audiences would accept multi-reel stories when the subject matter justified the additional length.
