‘Harlon arranged for the Baers to come and stay… Here.’ Chives waited for the disproportionate reaction and inevitable shouting.
‘CHIVES! This is an asylum. It is wedged with inmates and vampires. First you dump malicious insects here, then snakes, followed by big cats, and an immoless, and now you think it’s holiday camp!’
‘Yes Sir, but may I suggest that some of those were your idea?’ Chives replied.
‘You most certainly may not. Why do we need Baers here? Where am I supposed to put them? Perhaps you could put them in with the vampires, or even better in YOUR vespiary!’ Nicolas’s demeanour instantly reverted to his jovial self. He smiled, which made Chives wholly uneasy, ‘And why do we need the Baers?’

This was a conversation Chives definitely did not want to have,
‘For The Immoless’s protection. Harlon believes that her blood is most valuable, and will attract threats.’
‘Threats. She has me looking after her, what possible threat could arise?’ Nicolas’s face elongated slightly as he spoke.
‘I suspect Harlon is concerned that someone may attempt to drain the blood from her.’
‘And who in The Deep would possibly want to do that?’
Chives changed tactic,
‘Sir, surely you want what is best for the Immoless?’

‘There are a lot of things I want,’ Nicolas said after some thought, ‘I want MY Immoless here, not roaming around with strange men all day. I want Webster to stop banging on about his plan all day, and I might add, I am sick and tired of everyone milling around my asylum needlessly. If all this nonsense continues I will evict myself from the asylum and get a respectable position as a surgeon at The Ashurrel Hospital.’
