The Monster Beneath the Gentleman
Within the mythology of Immortalis, an immortal being possesses a Vero and an Evro, primary and primal manifestations capable of acting independently. Chester embodies the instinctive, unruly dimensions of Nicolas’s existence. The distinction produces one of the novel’s most entertaining supernatural relationships. Nicolas demands discipline, obedience and recognition of his magnificence. Chester favours immediate gratification, outrageous behaviour and the freedom to make an appalling nuisance of himself. They are not separate individuals in the conventional sense. Chester is Nicolas, stripped of much of the restraint his governing manifestation considers essential. The resulting conflict exposes the absurdity of a monster attempting to impose standards of conduct upon himself. His primal nature also makes Chester dangerous. Beneath the profanity and musical performances lies an immortal predator whose impulses are not constrained by ordinary human morality.
Music, Mischief and Monstrous Appetites
Chester’s association with the Pied Piper extends into his supernatural musical identity. His flute and performances make him a distinctive presence within the Nicolai, the 216 physical manifestations of Nicolas DeSilva. Music is part of his character, but so is disruption. Pauley the Cheese, the collective’s criminal mastermind, repeatedly discovers that elaborate schemes are no match for Chester’s enthusiasm for interference. Financial arrangements, criminal enterprises and carefully maintained authority become opportunities for sabotage. The consequences are frequently disastrous for everybody involved. Chester’s behaviour supplies much of the novel’s grotesque comedy, combining supernatural horror with profanity, irreverence and a spectacular disregard for professional courtesy. Corax Asylum contains scientists, surgeons, architects and administrators. Chester makes their lives considerably less orderly.
A Primal Monster in Love
Chester’s relationship with Allyra Cavidini introduces a more disturbing dimension to his character. Allyra becomes the object of Nicolas’s obsessive romantic ambitions, placing her within the emotional and physical reach of the entire collective. Chester’s attachment to her is shaped by his own instincts and desires. His behaviour differs sharply from Nicolas’s calculated efforts to control her, but his primal nature creates dangers of its own. The relationship complicates the familiar distinction between the charming monster and the predatory one. Chester can be funny, affectionate, outrageous and cruel. His humour does not erase his capacity for harm, and his intimacy with Allyra does not place him outside the collective’s struggle for possession. The Pied Piper remains a monster, however entertaining his performances become.
