We started releasing information about Immortalis early. Moving from novellas, anthologies and RP to an epic series was a huge step. Our earliest concern was that readers may not grasp Nicolas, initially, as he is unique and complex.
The story hinges on one monstrous being who’s psychological fractures manifest as other beings who are all him. He experiences most of what they experience, but due to the magnitude of voices and perceptions he does not always grasp context.
Each Nicolas is both individual, and part of the whole. Chester is a slightly different entity, as all Immortalis have a primal body; Theaten has Kane, Behmor has Tanis, Allyra has Orochi, and Absolem has Arachron.
Primus, the father, gifted Nicolas with multiplicity to prevent Theaten and Lilith running ragshot with their archaic autocracy. This, of course, backfired, and instead, Nicolas runs ragshot over everyone.
Each alter has a specific purpose. Everything Nicolas does is strategic, and he is obsessively patient. Plan BAT, as Webster (the shit stirring genius alter who sees Allyra as both a necessity and a threat) calls it, is it a two-stage plan, the purposes of which are not revealed until the climax of the first book.
The alters agree on stage one, but the fracture starts to show in the implementation of stage two. This is the point that allows Allyra to push back against Nicolas and weaponise his alters and the fracture. This, of course, causes Nicolas to escalate.
As Allyra bonds with the alters, the question is, is Nicolas as ‘wounded’ and jealous as he claims, or was this the intention all along?
Nicolas’s intentions are never good, at best they are morally ambiguous and self-serving, and all of the alters are part of Nicolas. Allyra also finds that her own circle methodically decreases due to accidents and sudden losses of allegiance, and Nicolas replaces all losses with a Nicolas.
As the plot thickens, the fracture cracks. Allyra suffers one horrific truth after another, until the glass shatters, and only one course remains for Nicolas to take.
